Death

Newburyport (Plum Island) — Charlene Huber, 68, of Newburyport (Plum Island), passed away Friday, March 22, 2013 at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Her daughter was by her side. Born in North Little Rock, Ark. on August 18, 1944, Charlene was the daughter of the late Emmett Daniel Furr and Annie Ozamae (Huggs) Furr, and was a graduate of North Little Rock High School, class of 1962. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduation where she met and married David L. Newton of Bradford. After being discharged from service, she relocated to Newburyport (Plum Island), where she worked for K-Mart for nearly 20 years, as well as the former Sailor Bill's Restaurant. She followed that with a long tenure at Rich's Department store in Danvers, and more recently was employed by Jackson Lumber and Millworks in Lawrence, and as a door greeter at the Portsmouth Walmart. However, her favorite occupation was that of being a mother and grandmother. A hard-working, strong, independent woman, Charlene always made her family a priority, giving them all she had. She had an open-door policy to all her children's friends, and acted as a "second mom" to many, earning the nickname "lady" to her sons' friends. She was compassionate, loving, accepting, caring, thoughtful, warm and very outgoing. She would often have hour-long conversations in the checkout line at the grocery store and loved sharing her life with friends and strangers alike. Her warm personality and contagious laugh endeared her to everyone she met. She always lived life to the fullest with a song in her heart, always humming and dancing around while going through the motions of her day. We will miss her dearly and continue to keep her in our hearts. Charlene is survived by her three loving children, Robert C. Newton of Milton, N.H., Timothy A. Newton and his wife, Jean Newton of Amesbury, and her daughter, Deanna M. (Newton) Walsh of Dover N.H.; and three grandchildren whom she adored, Lillian Newton of Amesbury, and Emily and Gavin Walsh of Dover, N.H. She also leaves a sister and brother-in-law, Emma Gene and Harold Studie of Quitman, Ark. and a brother, Thomas Furr of Georgia, along with several nieces and nephews.
