Death
Ralph William Calloway, Sr., passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at the home of his son, in Concord, just days before his 89th birthday. He was the son of the late Charlie William Calloway and the late Annie Verble Calloway. He was also preceded in death by his late wife, Mazelle Herrin Calloway and his siblings Margaret DeArmon, Ruby Kellough, Leonard Calloway and his grandson, Chad Eric Furr. Those surviving Ralph include his wife Mildred Smith Calloway of Concord, his daughter and her husband, Dawn and Ralph Furr, his sons and their wives Bill and Gerry Calloway and Steve and Rhonda Calloway, and six grandsons and five great grandchildren. Ralph was a leader and a public servant for much of his life. These characteristics were developed at an early age and, by the age of 15, he had earned his Eagle Scout Award. He entered World War II at the age of 17 and also served in the Korean War. His service continued through the Naval Reserves and he acquired a total service record of 21 years. In addition to his military career, he also served as chief of the Harrisburg Volunteer Fire Department. Ralph had a heart to serve, so it was no surprise when he helped begin a Boy Scout Troop at Bayless Presbyterian Church in Concord, and served in leadership at Troop 173 in Harrisburg, NC. A world traveler to places like Japan, Holland, Hawaii, England, and much of the continental USA, Ralph took photographs wherever he went. He had a natural photographer’s eye and his work was more than just talented. In 1978 Ralph co founded Cabarrus R and R, a heating and air conditioning business. Through mergers and name changes, that family business now exists in Harrisburg, NC, as All Temp Co., Inc. Father, husband, son, brother, leader, community servant, artist, businessman, Boy Scout, military defender...and the list could go on and on. Ralph William Calloway, Sr., he will be missed. Services will be held at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord on Saturday, January 2, 2015, beginning at 11:00 a.m. when the family will be receiving. Funeral ceremonies will begin at Noon with full military burial at Carolina Memorial Park in Harrisburg immediately following. Pastor Jeff Burris will be officiating. Memorials may be made in Ralph’s honor to Harvest Community Church, 4284 Orphanage Road, Concord, NC 28027 or to Amvets, 1450 North Main Street, China Grove, NC 28023.Endnotes
