MOUNT PLEASANT - A two-vehicle wreck Saturday killed one man and left another seriously injured after a head-on collision on N.C. 49, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Chad Furr, 33, died at the scene of the wreck, located near the Walker Road intersection, North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Richard Cook said. The second victim has not been identified yet and was flown to N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was a white man in his 20s driving a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport. The caravan's license plate is "VRH-1445." The wreck occurred about 7:41 a.m. when the driver of the caravan was headed north on N.C. 49. Furr was driving south in a 2006 Chevrolet work van. The work van was for All-Temp Company Inc. The Dodge caravan driver veered off of the right side of the road and then came left, crossing the centerline, Cook said. Furr tried to go to the right to avoid the caravan, but the vehicles hit head on. "There were no skid marks before impact from either one," Cook said. "The witness on the motorcycle said they were driving less than 55." The motorcycle driver, Susan Wessinger, 45, of Richfield, was on a Honda motorcycle following Furr when she saw everything happen. Wessinger slid her motorcycle to the ground to avoid the wreck ahead of her, Cook said. "If she would have plowed into them, her injuries would have been a lot more severe," Cook said. Mount Pleasant Fire Chief Tim Hurlocker said after the wreck it took about 30 to 45 minutes to get the driver of the Dodge caravan out of the vehicle. A helicopter landed on N.C. 49 to fly the driver to Winston-Salem, he said. N.C. 49 was blocked off by emergency service workers from the Cold Springs Road intersection to the Walker Road intersection for at least half an hour. This is the second fatal wreck on N.C. 49 in less than a year. A mother and daughter were killed on Christmas Eve as the family was pulling into the driveway of their home. Their vehicle was struck by a man charged with driving while impaired. "It was about 300 yards from this accident," Hurlocker said. He said the Mount Pleasant Fire Department responds to an average of at least five serious wrecks a year on the stretch of N.C. 49 between Cold Springs Road and Walker Road. Cabarrus County Rescue Squad, Cold Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office and Cabarrus County EMS were also at the wreck.
