Virginia Helen MASHBURN
(17 Nov 1920 - 18 Oct 2001)
Martin Gilmore Wilson Sr. is 15/32 Cherokee and 1/2 Dakota Sioux and 1/32 English/Danish. He is the Son of Iris Red Cloud, and is the Great Great Grandson of Chief Red Cloud, who handed the U.S. Army its first defeat in history, and closed the Bozeman Trail.
Virginia Mashburn Wilson (now Furr) is 31/32 Powhatan/Cherokee and a direct descendant of Powhatan.
On November 17, 1920, in Seymour, Missouri, I was born. My parents were JeweIl (Shumate) Mashburn, and Joseph Davis Mashburn. I was named Virginia Helen Mashburn. I was named for my two grandmothers, Virginia (Davis) Mashburn, and Clara Helen (Wiggington) Shumate.
Shortly after my birth daddy developed Tuberculosis so we went to Colorado, for a climate change. We lived at Boulder and Fort Collins. The Colorado climate arrested the Tuberculosis, which was the result of having the' Flu in France at the end of World War II. After staying in Colorado for a year and a half, we returned to Missouri.
Daddy took some College courses in Colorado. I do not what they were. We went to Marionville, Missouri south of Springfield for a while where he studied Poultry.
After our stay at Marionville we went to Seymour. We also spent some time in Springfield. Grandpa Shumate died during this period. He was John Shumate.
It wasn't long until we moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Grandma Shumate and two of mother's sisters did too.
We stayed in Kansas City right at five years. Grandma stayed as long as we did. One of my aunts died, the other one went to Chicago and got married.
I went to school at George B. Longan, Kindergarten through third grade. The school was on 39th Street about two or three blocks from Main Street, a popular shopping district at that time.
I finished the third grade in the spring of 1930. I will back tract a little to say my brother Robert Lindberg Mashburn was born at Bell Memorial Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas on August 17th 1927. I had lost a baby brother in 1925, he was a premature 6 months baby, Daddy tried to feed him with an eyedropper,he couldn't swallow, he was well formed, but too little. He was named Eugene.
My brother born in 1927 was ok and lived to the age of 39 years and 3 day's, he died of liver cancer, August 20 1966. I am the oldest child of the family. I was 6 years 9 months older than my brother Bob. I will tell of two sisters as we go
In May of 1930 we left Kansas City and moved to Seymour out in the country. Grandma moved to Springfield On AUGUST August 11 1930 my sister Beverly Jean Mashburn was born in SPRINGFIELD. I am 9 years and 9 months lacking 6 days older than she is. She is still living. Late August of 1931 we moved to Springfield.
I finished all my schooling in Springfield. In 1932 on September 11. I accepted Christ and was baptized that night. I have always considered that the important day in my life. I have had many important days for various reasons. That day has been my main focus on life. I am very proud of my Indian Blood, I always have been.
On June 13 1935 my sister Agnes Louise Mashburn was born I am 14 years and 8 months, lacking 4 days older than she, she is still living.
I have been told that my great grand parents were ashamed and refused all association with their heritage and their legal rights . They had rights in Oklahoma as Cherokee descendants so did Grandma, I remember seeing the man at her house who could get them for her. I was real small then, she did confirm to me later though, that it was the man.
The laws in Missouri were against people who had Indian blood, so were they ashamed or were they just plain scared? I say they were just plain scared. They were land owners and not legally allowed to own land. In fact you can't find records of some of the land they did own.
When I was in the 11th grade at what then was Springfield Senior High School (now Central High School) THE SPRINGFIELD NEWS AND LEADER the daily afternoon paper, sent a man over to the school to take my picture. We were studying American History and American Indians. I was the one in class who was proud enough and bold enough to admit my heritage.
My picture came out where all could see it, it was not a little hidden one. I kept the picture until the late 1970's and I gave it to one of my children, so far it has not been found, we are still hoping that it will be soon.
I also took two years of Art in school as well as typing which I am rusty at and shorthand.
I have had just a little bit of Business College but not much. I have hobbies that I like to do. I like to do Leather Craft, Embroidery, some sewing, Crewel and some Cross Stitch.
On April 28, 1940 I married Martin Gilmore Wilson. To this union were born four children. Martin Gilmore Wilson, Jr. April 27,1941 next - John Earl Wilson, December 11, 1943. Next Helen Louise Wilson, June 20,1945 and last James Lee Wilson-August 4, 1947 all of whom are living.
Martin was a mixture of Sioux and Cherokee. He lived to be 38 years and 8 months and 19 days old when he had a sudden fatal Coronary Occlusion, October 19. 1958. I had a brief, disastrous marriage from September 24, 1970 to September 24, 1971, to Robert Lee Burkhart, I got my name of Wilson back. He also was part Indian.
On September 30, 1974 I married Thomas F. Furr. That marriage lasted until he died of a heart attack on January 27 1993. Tom was part Indian and part Jewish, he was 77 years 3months and 2 days old.
Of the Mashburn's it is my understanding that my grandpa, Irving J. Mashburn was head of the Clan and my dad next. I am not positive about that yet.
The LORD has been good to me and let me see 20 grand-children, 15 great-grandchildren and number 16 is due in March of this year 1994.
I have been a Homemaker mostly but I have also been a Sunday School Teacher. Sunday School Secretary, A Deputy
Sheriff-1954-1956. A Cashier,a Shoe Sales person, 1959- 1961 then I moved with the 2 youngest children to the Ozark Missouri area and the Sparta ,Missouri area for 12 years. Helped in a Custom Slaughter Plant 1962-1968. That is the main things I can think of to put down.
