Death
Cecil J. Smith, 79, of Albemarle passed away Sunday, October 4, 2015 in Stanly Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be 11 AM Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at Porter Baptist Church with Rev. Kenny Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 in the evening from 6 PM until 8PM at Stanly Funeral Home. Mr. Smith was born on April 16, 1936 in Stanly County, N.C. and was the son of the late Boone Grady Smith and Lillian Treece Smith. He was a member and former Deacon of Porter Baptist Church in Norwood, N.C. and was retired from the City of Albemarle Electric Department with 35 years of service. He was a member of the Stanly County Rescue Squad with over 20 years of service, where he invented Cecil s Rig , a device used to evacuate victims from car accidents. Cecil loved his dogs, outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and working with his hands. He especially loved his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Ellen Hartsell Smith of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Denise Smith Furr (Dean) of Bessemer City, N.C., a daughter in-law Lydia Williams Smith of Norwood, N.C., two brothers, Roy Smith and Bill Smith; one sister, Betty Smith Bigelow; grandchildren Jessica Furr Saricicek (Emre) of Asheville, N.C., Jonathan Bruce Furr of Gastonia, Lindsey Ann Smith of Albemarle, and Allison Leigh Smith of Norwood; great- grandchildren Walter Aslan and Mirabelle Raven Saricicek, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by one son, Rickey Dudley Smith; four brothers Kenneth Smith, Benson Smith, Luther Smith, and Jim Smith; and one sister, Dorothy Smith Swaringen.
