Notes
Death
Essie "Jean" Elswick, 68, of Charlotte, NC passed away July 12, 2025 at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born October 23, 1956 in Gaston County, NC, a daughter of the late James Davis and Essie McManus Davis. Jean can be described as a woman with a kind heart whose compassion had not limits. Born in "Christmas Town," USA, she was a lifelong resident of NC. She grew up in the Eagle Mill Village and was proud of her heritage. As an adult, Jean opened her heart and home to everyone, including her children's friends and neighborhood kids, who affectionately called her "Momma Jean." She adored her family and her husband and worked hard to provide a loving home for them, especially around Christmas and other holidays when she would cook special dishes, decorate her home, and made holiday crafts with her grandchildren. Jean enjoyed traveling with her family. Charleston, SC and Gatlinburg, TN were just a few of her favorite places. Jean also had a heart for animals, especially dogs. After devoting over 21 years to Pharr Yarns, she retired. Jean is survived by her devoted husband, Dwayne Elswick; sons, Scottie Furr (Barbara), J.C. Furr (Ashley); daughters, Tammy "Tabetha" Moore (Michael) and Lisa Furr; brother, Jimmy Davis; sisters, Mary Robertson and Patsy Kell; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Steve "Buddy" Davis and Joe Davis. The family will receive friends at McLean Funeral Directors of Belmont on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 beginning at 12:00 PM. A Celebration of Life service will follow in Bumgardner Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Belmont at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Harry Davis officiating. Committal will be at Goshen Cemetery of Belmont following the service.
