ALBEMARLE, N.C. – A Fort Bragg soldier injured in a terrible crash Friday, along with nine members from the 82nd Airborne Division was from Albemarle, NBC Charlotte has learned. Joshua Furr and members of the 82nd Airborne Division were involved in a crash with a logging truck on Highway 15 near Highway 144. The soldiers were all part of The Honor Guard heading to a funeral in Indian Trail. NC Highway Patrol said Furr was one of two soldiers airlifted after the van they were riding in failed to yield the right of way and was t-boned by the logging truck. Furr, the father of two, was flown to UNC Chapel Hill – where his family remains by his side. "She (wife) is distraught, but we are all hoping for the best," said his father-in-law, Todd Sullivan, who is watching the two grandchildren, ages three and five. Sullivan tells NBC Charlotte, Furr and his daughter bought a house in Albemarle with plans to move into their new home this new year, when he completes his service at Fort Bragg. "He had like six months left in the Army. They already had a house bought here they were on their way back," he said. Sullivan says Furr suffered a fractured head and hip, and possible damage to his brain. The family is waiting on tests to determine the extent of his injuries. "They don't know how bad it is yet," said Sullivan. He remains in critical condition at UNC Chapel Hill. The driver of the van was cited for failure to yield right of way.
