I. F. Plyler, Jr. MONROE - Mr. I. F. Plyler, Jr., of Monroe, passed away on Friday, June 1, 2012, at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation Center of Monroe. A Funeral Service to Celebrate the Life of Mr. Plyler will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 3, 2012, at the Benton Heights Presbyterian Church, officiated by Reverend Paul Saleeby and Reverend Coy Blackman. Interment will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park, with military honors. Mr. Plyler was born in Union County, North Carolina, a son of the late I.F. Plyler, Sr. and Ida Jeanette Foard Plyler. He grew up in Union County, and then served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He returned to Union County and worked with his father in farming. Mr. Plyler married Inez Carnes in 1955. He owned and operated the Union County Livestock Market, and continued to farm throughout his life. He was a lifelong member, and former Elder of Benton Heights Presbyterian Church in Monroe, NC. Mr. Plyler served two terms as a Union County Commissioner in the 1960's. He served as President of the Livestock Market Association for many years, and was inducted into the Livestock Hall of Fame in 2000. He was President of the NC Cattlemen's Association. Mr. Plyler was a charter member of the North Carolina State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame Animal Science Scholarship 2008 Endowment. He was presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award. He received this recognition from the State of North Carolina on August 1, 2010, and it was presented by his brother, Senator Aaron Plyler. Also in 2010, I.F. was honored as the Union County Man of the Year. Mr. I.F., known as the "Candy Man", had a nursing home ministry for over twenty years, visiting elderly in the county on Sundays and delivering fruits and treats from him and his wife, Inez. He also received tremendous pleasure over the years attending the Breakfast Club at Hilltop Restaurant with family, friends, and business associates. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Ira Plyler; two brothers, Ralph Furr, Wilburn Furr; four sisters, Elizabeth Plyler Mattox, Clara Furr Elliott, Mildred Furr Dove, and Helena Furr Keziah. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Inez Carnes Plyler of the home; one daughter, Jane Plyler Vandiver and her husband, Dr. Scott Vandiver, of Boone; two granddaughters, Susan Vandiver and Alice Vandiver, both of Boone; one brother, Senator Aaron Plyler and wife, Dorothy, of Monroe; a special friend, Rick Harris; and many nephews and nieces. The family will receive friends Saturday night, June 2, 2012, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Davis Funeral Home; 1003 East Franklin Street in Monroe.
