Conrad C. "Coon" CRAYTON

Elaine Walsh writes, "Conrad C. Crayton, my great grandfather, was the black sheep in the family. He was a son of Isaac William and Nancy S. Page Crayton. Conrad, born Oct. 1,1830 in Montgomery County (Stanly Co.) died Feb. 15, 1918 of pneumonia. His nickname was "Coon." He and wife, Anna Louise Smith Crayton, were the parents of 11 children. William, John and Uriah, sons of Isaac William Crayton joined the military (all enlisted on the same day), John Allen Crayton asked his brother, Conrad to look after his wife and 3 children. Martha Jane Starnes, wife of John, lived in a log cabin behind the home of Conrad. He looked after Martha quite well. He fathered 2 of her illegitimate children born to her after husband, John was killed in 1863. The two children were Matthew Ryre "Math" and Henry David Crayton. Uncle "Math" was born Jan. 1, 1868. Conrad's twin daughters by his wife were born April 24, 1868."
