Individual Details
John Stanley SMITH
(1820 - 1863)
He was a farmer in Stanly County, NC. He was in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in the Co. A, 17th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. He was in the Battle of Gettysburg in July, 1863. One record says he was wounded in the head in that battle and implies that he died therefrom, and is buried at Gettysburg. However, the records of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Richmond, Va., show that he died while a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Md., and was buried there, but later was removed to Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery. The latter is confirmed by the inscription on the monument to Confederate Soldiers and sailors.
