Edward TOMLINSON

(26 Oct 1745 - 21 May 1830)

Also Known As:<_AKA> Edward Thomas Linson
From Nadine Peterson (NPeter2089@aol.com) Located in 1778 in Frederick County, Maryland on a deed of sale of property. Soon after, circa 1780 they were found in Shenandoah County, Virginia, then to Greenbriar County, Virginia (now West Virginia). They purchased property there in the Richlands area. About 1795 Edward gradually shortened his name to Linson (tax records in Greenbriar County Courthouse). All his children thereafter used the Linson form. Son George and family moved to Madison County, Ohio circa 1805-1810 and some of the family later moved there. Edward and Anna moved to Madison County in 1824, both died there in 1830.

Additional Information:

Edward Tomlinson (Edward Thomas Linson)

Born in 1745, based on information on his tombstone in Linson Family Cemetery in Stokes Township, Madison County, Ohio. Married Anna Christ (or Crist), date unknown; first recorded information at this time are several land transactions, the first being a deed of sale in Frederick County, Maryland. The first documented information was found in a supplement to the 1810 Census of Virginia, listing him as having two horses and as one tithable male living in Greenbrier County.
1820 US Census for Lewisburg, Greenbrier Co., VA
Edward T. Linson: Males: 1 26-45, 1 over 45, Females: 1 26-45, 1 over 45. 3 persons in Agriculture. One male slave 26-45. Total 5 persons.

History of Linson Family states that he came to Ohio and lived in a log cabin near the Linson burying ground. His will was filed at the historic Greenbrier County Courthouse, dated March 8, 1824. He paid taxes on 559 acres of land on either side of the road to HUDSONPILLER'S MILL. The last land tax entry was in 1830. His will was opened and read at the Courthouse on August 25, 1830, which would indicate that his death was about that date. The land was conveyed in 1834, and the Estate in 1835. A complete copy of his will is extant and is part of these records filed with the Linson material in possesion of Nadine Peterson (daughter of Eugenie Linson Walker).

He married Anna (Christ or Crist) sometime before 1780 (where and when unknown). We do have land transaction records. Anna signed deeds with a stylized "A". They signed a deed dated 26 Aug 1780 in Frederick Co. Maryland (Frederick Land Records WR-2, pg 796-8, probably a departure deed. Whereabouts 1780-83 are still not clear. Still listed "of Frederick" 1783. On 26 Nov 1783 Edward Tommelinson of Frederick Co. MD bought 200 acres in Shenandoah Co. VA (Shendandoah Co. VA DB B pg 344, 346). In 18 Mar 1788-29 Mar 1788, Edward Tommelinson's wife Ann of Shenandoah sold land there (Shen DB6, pg 169, 171, 173). On 2 Oct 1788, Edward Tommylinsey (recorded as Tomlinson) bought land in Greenbrier Co., VA (1:40). Sold that land on 27 Oct 1789, Edward Tomlinson and Agness, but signed Ann(A). Bought 231 acres on 28 Jun 1791, Edward Tomylinson (LB 3252.27). In the September 1803 Greenbrier Co. Tax Record he was listed as Edward Linson. My (Nadine Peterson) search in the Greenbrier Co. Courthouse found the following regarding the name change:
Tax Lists within the District of Charles Abuth:
