Death
Emmett Ray Owens Jr., 84, of Thomasville, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004 in Forsyth Medical Center. Born Aug. 7, 1917 in Moore County, Mr. Owens is a son of Emmett Owens Sr. and Docie Furr Owens. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a flight engineer and plane captain on B-29s. After his discharge from the service, he moved to Greensboro where he was employed with Western Electric and later with Wilson Machine Shop. He was self-employed for over 30 years in carpet installation. During his time, he was involved with the various furniture showrooms. Mr. Owens was an avid golfer and a member of the High Point Golf Association. He was a member of Love of God Baptist Church in Thomasville. Mr. Owens is survived by his wife Audrey Adams Owens of the home and three children, Delores Owens Gravatt and her husband Steve of Fancy Gap, Va.; Grgeg Owens and his wife Susan of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Jeff Owens of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service for Mr. Owens will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hughes Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hill and the Rev. Dwayne Locklear officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Love of God Baptist Church, 5606 S. Hwy. 109, Thomasville, N.C., 27360.
