Death
Charles S. Dorton, age 69, died on August 16, 2016. He was born in Concord, NC on July 16, 1947. Charles graduated from Hartsell High School in Concord, NC and went on to Western Carolina University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. Charles moved to Columbia in the 1970’s, working for Colonial Life. He purchased Russell Massey Independent Agency of Columbia in 1985 and later expanded Russell Massey to Chapin. He has over 35 years involvement with Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of South Carolina (IIABSC) of which he had many leadership roles. He served on the Board of Directors from 1991-1993, was President of IIABSC from 1998-1999, Agent of the Year in 2003 and was currently on the IIABSC Foundation Board of Trustees. He received the Achievement Award for Leadership of the Government Affairs Committee in 1994 as well as served on the Government Affairs and Convention Committee often lobbying for IIABSC in Washington, DC. He also served on the SC Auto Insurance Facility Board. Charles served on the South Carolina Big “I” Junior Golf Committee as Chairman for over 10 years, meeting and mentoring many young Golfers. Golf was a lifelong passion. Golf led him to Hilton Head Island. There he became a member of the Harbor Town Yacht Club. He served on the Board of the Harbor Town Yacht Club for eleven years, 2003-2013. In those years he played an integral role on the transition of ownership of the Club from Prudential to Bache/Fogelman in 2005. He served as Commodore of the Harbor Town Yacht Club from 2009 -2013. In that role he successfully completed the remodeling of the rooms, Villas and 4th floor Club Room. He also was responsible for implementing Board Terms and growing the Board from 5 to 7 members. “Charlie” was a Free Mason and a member of Faith Presbyterian Church. He was known to be a man with a big heart and contributed to many Golf Tournaments as well as other charities. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 1811 Dutch Fork Rd., Irmo, SC 29063 conducted by the Rev. Karl MacCallister. Honorary pallbearers will be the Agents of Russell Massey. The family will receive friends at the church following the services on Sunday. Memorials are suggested to Columbia International University, 7435 Monticello Rd., Columbia, SC 29203.Endnotes
