Death
Larry (Butch) Dwain Shaw, a beloved husband, father, brother, son, teacher, coach, and friend, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Cedar Ridge Nursing Center after only a 2 and half day stay. He had a two day stay in the hospital before that. His loving family was by his side remembering Matthew 5:4 “Let the words of Jesus comfort you in sorrow.” Butch, as he was affectionally called by family and friends, was born to R.T. Shaw and Louella Faye (McKee) Shaw in Denton on December 12, 1940. His grandfather, Bill McKee, was a special influence and loving supporter during his lifetime. Butch graduated from Denton High School in 1959, where he played football, basketball, and ran track. He received Honorable Mention All-State in basketball his senior year, since he was so fast and scored so many points, despite being 5’7” in height. Butch not only graduated from the University of North Texas, but in addition to two degrees, he met the love of his life Carolyn Ann Furr. Butch married Carolyn during their sophomore year and both continued until they each earned a BS and Med degrees. He began teaching and coaching immediately after NT graduation at Congress Jr. High for several years then Denton High School for a total of 31 years at DISD. He enjoyed and had a valuable influence on his students and loved coaching. He coached football and basketball at Denton High School and had many winning seasons. Even in his final years, he would hear from former students around town and in businesses. “Hi Coach Shaw. You were my favorite teacher.” He was a family man on the go. He and his family enjoyed many camping trips with his brother and family. With Carolyn and sons, he traveled to all 50 states, Israel which was his favorite journey, Canada, and Mexico. Of course, sports were dear to him, and he really looked forward to watching and cheering for the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns to victory. Butch received Jesus as his savior at 16 years of age at Calvary Baptist Church in Denton. After marriage, he took his family to First Baptist Church in Denton where he was a faithful member in church and the Bible Book Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife, soulmate, and best friend Carolyn, loving sister and brother in laws, son, Chad, and many caring nieces and nephews. He will be laid to rest by his son, Corey Todd at Roselawn Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his mother, his second father, Murl Calvert, grandparents, Bill and Mary McKee, brother Gary, and sister Rhonda. A visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at DeBerry Funeral Home from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. A funeral service will take place on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Denton starting at 2:00 PM. Internment will be held at Roselawn following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a contribution be made to the First Baptist Church of Denton in memory of Larry Butch Shaw.Endnotes
