Death
WINSTON-SALEM DIANNE HATLEY FURR, 69, PASSED away on December 25, 2015. She is survived by her husband, Anthony Furr; her son, Andy Furr (Ashlee) of Greensboro, NC; her daughter, Amanda Furr Smith (Shawn) of Atlanta, GA; her sister, Freda Hatley Smith (Alan) of Matthews, NC; her sister-in-law, Peggy Furr Wilson (Robert) of Salisbury, NC; and her grandchildren: Tate Furr, Avery Furr, Henry Smith and Charles Smith. Dianne was born in Mission, NC on July 31, 1946 to Dollie and Marvin Hatley. She was a graduate of Stanly County High School and Pfeiffer University. After graduation, she worked as a special education teacher in Phoenix, Arizona and Winston-Salem, NC. In 1965, Dianne was crowned Miss Stanly County and competed in the Miss North Carolina pageant.She enjoyed spending time with her husband at their mountain house and traveling with friends. Quilting amazing masterpieces for her grandchildren was a passion as well as tending to her beautiful garden in Old Salem. She worked as a guide for 17 years at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) and loved teaching others about history. She was an avid UNC basketball fan but would pull for the UGA Bulldogs if her grandchildren were in town and it was football season.She was a loyal and caring friend. After managing moves to several cities including Phoenix, AZ, New York City, NY, Atlanta, GA, Columbia, SC, Greensboro, NC and Winston-Salem, NC, she amassed a group of incredibly dedicated, caring and hysterical friends over the years. She loved each and every one of them.She also loved giraffes and her dogs: Happy, Casey and Bridget.A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 28th, 2:00 pm at Salem Funeral Home, 120 S. Main St., Winston-Salem, NC, 27101. A visitation will be held at the family residence after the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) 600 S. Main St., Winston-Salem, NC, 27101 or the Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center 3333 Silas Creek Pkwy., Winston-Salem, NC, 27103.Endnotes
