Death
CHARLOTTE — Joyce Carpenter Calloway of Rocky Falls Road, passed away Friday evening at The Haven of Pineville. A memorial service will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Kremer officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. They will also receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Wilkinson Funeral Home in Concord. A private graveside service will be Tuesday morning at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord. A native of Concord, N.C., she was the daughter of Annabelle Furr Carpenter and William Crawford Carpenter. She attended Salem College, Queens, and did her Masters studies at University of Virginia. Mrs. Calloway has resided in Charlotte, N.C., for the past 39 years. Mrs. Calloway was an active member of St John’s Baptist Church, Charlotte, N.C. participating in many church related projects and a long time member of The Friendship Sunday School Class, Women on Mission Organization, a regular volunteer for Vacation Bible School and the Health and Wellness Committee. In Charlotte, NC, and Greenville, NC, she was involved in many community outreach projects including Past President of the Women’s Missionary Society of Memorial Baptist Church, founding member of the Women’s Council of Realtors, founding member of the of the Summer Theater of East Carolina University, Executive Secretary of the Pitt County American Cancer Society, an active leader in the Boys Scouts of America program and a volunteer with Hospice. As her three beloved boys were making the transition from high school to college, she entered the real estate profession in Falls Church Va. in 1969. She later became one of the first women in North Carolina to be designated by the Board of Realtors as a Certified Residential Specialist. Her constant thought was “as unto the Lord.” Survivors include her beloved husband Donald R. Calloway, Sr.; sons, Donald R. “Chip” Calloway, Jr. of Alexandria, Va., William E. Calloway of Columbia, S.C., and Jon K. Calloway of Walhalla, S.C.; daughters-in-law Patricia T. Calloway and Ann M. Calloway. And her adored grandchildren William E. Calloway, Jr, Ann McDowell Calloway, Charles Crawford Calloway and Christopher Hughes Calloway and his wife Emily Jackson Calloway. She is also survived by her sister Louise C. Craig of Concord, N.C. and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Annabelle Carpenter, and her brother Grady Carpenter.
