Death
Funeral services for Asa James Furr, 39, of 115 Robinson Pl., well-known orchestra leader, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Osborn Chapel with the Rev. Ira Flowers, pastor of Mangum Memorial Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery. Mr. Furr died at about 5:15 a.m. Friday following a heart attack. His band was billed under the name, “Jack Furr and His Orchestra.” He was also an agent for Lee National Life Insurance Co. Mr. Furr, born and reared at McNeill, Ark., and lived here for eight years. He served in the Coast Artillery with the U. S. Army prior to World War II. He was a member of Mangam Memorial Methodist Church and was also known here as a piano teacher. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Grace Carmichael Furr; two daughters, Sharon and Jackie Furr of Saratoga, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. E. F. Johnson and Mrs. Robert Baker, both of Magnolia, Ark., and Mrs. C. B. Thompson of Little Rock, Ark.; three brothers, D. O. Furr of Shreveport, Weldon Furr of Magnolia, Ark., and T. F. Furr of Waco, Tex. Pallbearers will be Reginald Poe, Louis Gregory, Dale Waller, Anthony J. Lewis, James Malben, Floyd Gordon, Owen Perry, T. J. Mandina, Charles G. Moore and Steve Grunhart. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the local musicians’ union and employees of Lee National Life Insurance Co.The Times, Shreveport, Louisiana, December 29, 1956
