Death
James Elisha Furr, Jr. of Wilmington died Saturday, January 23, 2010, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born in Concord, NC, January 19, 1922, the son of the late James Elisha Furr and Viola Carpenter Furr. Dr. Furr was a graduate of New Hanover High School, Class of 1939, Wake Forest College, Medical College of Virginia, and did post graduate studies in orthodontics at Columbia University. He served in the US Army Dental Corp during World War II. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Rotary International. He began his practice of General Dentistry in 1947. After 10 years of practice and further study, he limited his practice to Orthodontics and retired in 1991. He is survived by his wife, Lois Parker Furr, three sons, James Elisha Furr III, Lee Parker Furr, and Richard Dean Furr, five grandchildren, Catherine Furr Miller, James Elisha Furr IV, Richard Dean Furr, Jr., David Stewart Furr, and Laura Parker Furr, four great grandchildren, Randolph Keith Miller III, Benjamin James Miller, Parker Woodward Furr, and Addie Elizabeth Furr, and a brother, Col. Robert Earl Furr. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Ernest Thompson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 125 S. 3rd St., Wilmington, NC 28401; or the Wounded Warrior Project, 7020 AC Skinner Pkwy., Suite 100, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
