Death

Succumbing to a long illness of complications and infirmities of his advanced age, Mr. J. W. Canterbury Sr. departed this life at the home of his son, Mr. Ira Canterbury, in Summerlee, W. Va., last Friday, Nov. 26, 1937, at 7:30 o’clock. Mr. Canterbury was born near Lindside on Jan. 24, 1855, his age at death being 82 years, 10 months, 2 days, and he was a son of Granville and Mary J. Nickell Canterbury. On July 23, 1879, he was married to Miss Alice Virginia Caperton. She preceeded him to the grave on May 31, 1837 [1827]. To them was born the following children: Messrs. C. C. Canterbury of Lego, W. Va., Ira and Omer Canterbury of Sunnerlee, J. W. and D. P. Canterbury of Alderson, and Charles Canterbury of Philadelphia, Mrs. Mamie McGhee of Orchard, Mrs. Lucy French of Princeton, Mrs. Abbie Runyon, Winding Gulf, Mrs. Elizabeth Robertson of Mabscott, and Mrs. Sheila Edwards of True. He is also survived by 30 grandchildren, two bothers, Messr. T. J. Canterbury of Red Sulphur Springs, and J. L. Canterbury of Princeton, and one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Fleshman of Lindside. Following his marriage, Mr. Canterbury lived in Red Sulphur district until 1915 when he moved to a farm near Creamery. In 1919 he went to Fayette County where he passed the remainder of his life. Early in life he united with the Missionary Baptist Church and lived a consistent Christian life, honored and esteemed by all who knew him. He was a loving husband, a good father and a kind neighbor. His earthly body was laid to repose in the Bays cemetery in Fayette county, following funeral rites conducted by Rev. Mr. Donnelly in the presence of a large crowd of sorrowing friends. His grandsons served as pallbearers—Messrs. Leo, Julius, Richard, Vernon, Robert and Hobart Canterbury.
