The Skaggs family settled at a very early date between Knobs and Patrick's Peaks, a projection of Wolf Creek Mountain. Wolf Creek goes to the west and compels it to meet Greenbrier River 2 miles south of Alderson. The part of Greenbrier County that became Monroe County in 1799. The Skaggs were Germans. (Ref: Morton - Land Surveys under Botetourt County, Virginia - Thomas Skaggs, 270 acres on Wolf Creek March 12, 1774. Land Entry of Greenbrier Couty, Virginia by Stinson, p. 48 - The Commissioners of District of Augusta Co, Botetourt Co, and Greenbrier Co. Virginia, do certifiy that John Greyham due 300 acres by settlements before 1778 purchased from (assignee) of Thomas Skaggs, to include 70 acres survey made for Luke Stanifer in 1774, Greenbrier County on Greenbrier River opposite Lusher's? Island, January 19, 1780. It appears Thomas first had 300 acres in Greenbrier area which he sold and had 270 acres on Wolf Creek in 1774. Greenbrier County, West Virginia Court Orders by Stinson, p. 165 - Thomas Scaggs is to be exempted in the future from paying County and Parish on account of his old age and infirmity, April 28, 1795. Richard Skaggs, his son, sued William Morris and a jury was called August 27, 1789 - then Richard was ordered to pay Thomas and John Skaggs 125 lbs of tobacco each for 5 days of attendance as witnesses against William Morris, Jr.
