George DAVIS

John - thanks so much for the email and the tantalizing clues on Mildred. I had not seen this before or run across this book by Robt Lemuel Davis. I just recently saw it mentioned in a query as written in 1932 and it probably was the basis of much of the material I have seen. The bit about Ann Pickens has been around for a while but I have never seen any evidence of it or of another wife other than Mildred. Also, the 22 children seemslike rumor as I only have the ones named in Robert's will. You are right on Pickens & Davis lacking research in some areas as everyone seems to justrepeat the same story, including me. I have attached my Davis file whichis most everything I have on them. I'm sure there are errors here but Itried not to put anything in that was completely unsubstantiated. In the Bible of my gggrandfather, Samuel Pickens Davis, is the following entry inhis hand under marriages:
"Israel P. Davis (son of James Davis & Rebecca (Maiden name Pickens) to Sarah, daughter of Wm. Nesbit & Jane (maiden name Baker) Dec 26, 1813. of Mecklenburg, NC; she of Lancaster Dist. SC"
As far as I can tell, this is the only "proof" that Rebecca was even a Pickens. I have a transcript of the Tirzah Cemetery which has her grave as marked but don't know if this is an old stone or a new one.
Have you seen the books by Herman Ferguson on Mecklenburg? They are very good and they may have been out a while but they are new to our library. From one of them, it indicates there is a packet of loose estate papers for Robert Davis at the NC Archives. I have ordered these but no telling how long it will take. Perhaps this will give us some clue on his wife & children?
I reviewed the material I have and can't find anything on the Alexander family. I know I have run across them in this group but don't have anything relevant. Let me know what you think of all this and thanks again for the lead. Bill.

DAVIS
Davis is certainly one of the most common names in the world, being originally of English origin spreading to Scotland and Ireland as well. The task of researching such a common name would at first seem difficult if not impossible. However, the Davises discussed here were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians (ARP) and, as such, followed the familiar trek of those people from Ireland to Pennsylvania, from Pennsylvania to the Augusta County, VA area, and from Virginia to the Waxhaws in North and South Carolina.
The Waxhaw Settlement in the Carolinas was settled by the Scotch-Irish from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. This area today lies in Union County, NC and part of Lancaster County, SC. Over the years it has been in Bladen, Anson and Mecklenburg Counties in North Carolina. The settlement was named for the Waxhaw Indians who inhabited this area prior to a smallpox epidemic which practically obliterated their tribe. Some of the early settlers of this area were the families of Pickens, Davis, Crockett, Ramsey, Kennedy, Caldwell, Douglass, McCain, Montgomery, Walkup, Nutt, King, Martin, Jackson, Crawford, Calhoun, Taylor, Moore and Walker, many of whom came from Augusta County, VA.
The progenitor of this Davis line is believed to be George Davis who with his wife joined Bensalem Church in Bucks County, PA on November 4, 1722, having recently arrived from Ireland. Also joining on this day were William Pickens and wife and their son, Israel Pickens, with whom the Davises frequently intermarried. LDS Church records list a George Davis, son of Richard and Margaret Davis, christened July 13, 1684 in Dublin, Ireland. A George Davis was granted 400 acres on Buffalo River in Prince Edward County, VA on July 25, 1749, later Nelson County. Little else is known of George Davis but he probably died in Pennsylvania before 1740. His only known son was Robert Davis.
Robert Davis is believed to have been born about 1705 in Ireland. He immigrated with his parents to Bucks County, PA where he probably married. We know from later deeds that his wife was Mildred and she was perhaps a Crockett, a sister to Robert Crockett. In 1735, Robert Davis received a grant of 400 acres in Goochland County, VA, Augusta County being created in 1738. A Robert Davies was a member of the Augusta County Militia in 1742. In 1746, Robert Davis was granted 300 acres in Augusta County, VA on the west side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Court minutes for August 20, 1746 show Robert Davis as overseer of the road from top North Mountain to Wm. King's. Tithables for this road included Andrew Pickens.
The will of Robert Crockett dated November 16, 1746 was proved February 19, 1747 in Augusta County, VA. It names wife Margaret; sons John, Archibald, Samuel, Alexander, Robert (under age) and James (under age); daughter Jean Crockett. Executors were wife Margaret and Robert Davis. Witnesses were Thomas Gillham, James McCorkle and Robert Bratton. Numerous records can be found in Augusta County records of Robert Davis's administration of this estate.
On August 13, 1747, William Beverly of Essex County, VA deeded to Robert Davies for 8 pounds+ 145 acres in Beverly Manor witnessed by Wm. Henderson, James Crawford and Archibald Hamilton. Robert Davis/Davies also witnessed three other deeds on the same day for land deeded from William Beverly to James Lynn, James Crawford and Archibald Hamilton. On March 21, 1753, Robert Davis sold to John Brown 300 acres in Augusta County adjoining James Cathey, Samuel Wallace and the Beverly Manor line. On March 22, 1753, Robert Davis sold to John Brown 145 acres in Beverly Manor. On May 19, 1753, Robert Davis petitioned the court as executor of Robert Crockett saying "he is about to leave this Colony and begs to be released". John Ramsey, who married Margaret Crockett, the widow, was summoned and replaced him.
On March 20, 1753, John Crockett, son and heir of Robert Crockett, deceased sold 350 acres to James Moore. Witnesses were Robert Davis, Mildred Davis and Archibald Crockett.
On October 4, 1751, Robert Davis received a grant of 640 acres on the east side of the Catawba River in Anson County, NC. On April 9, 1753, Robert Davis received a grant of 465 acres on the northwest side of Waxhaw Creek in Anson County, NC. On April 24, 1756, William Beard of Anson County, NC sold to Robert Davis 300 acres on Waxhaw Creek witnessed by John Crockett, Robert Ramsey and Repentance Townsend. Also on April 24, 1756, Robert Davis of Anson County, NC deeded to Alexander Crockett, orphan and son of Robert Crockett deceased in Augusta County, VA "for natural love and affection" 202 acres on the north branch of Waxhaw Creek. Witnesses were Robert Ramsey, John Crockett and Repentance Townsend. From this we see there was some family relation between Robert Davis and the Crocketts.
On March 9, 1758, Rev. Robert Miller and his wife, Jean, in consideration of friendship and affection deeded land to the trustees of the Waxhaw Presbyterian Church who were Robert Davis, Robert Ramsey, John Lynn, Samuel Dunlap and Henry White witnessed by Robert McClelland, John Crockett and Andrew Pickens. This land was to be used for the Presbyterian Congregation of the Waxhaws for building of a church thereon.
Mecklenburg County, NC was created from Anson in 1762. There, on December 30, 1765, Robert Davis and wife Mildridge (Mildred) of Mecklenburg to George Davis of Mecklenburg land on the north side of Catawba River on a south branch of Twelve Mile Creek 1/2 mile from the Pee Dee River, granted March 26, 1755. Witnesses were George Davis, John Davis and Sarah Davis.
On June 25, 1772, Robert Davis of Craven County, SC, joiner, sold land in Mecklenburg County to Phillip Walker being 200 acres on both sides of Waxhaw Creek, part of a tract the said Robert formerly lived on, granted April 6, 1753. Witnesses were James Walkup, John Davis and Robert Davis. On July 3, 1772, Robert Davis of South Carolina sold land in Mecklenburg County to John McElroy being 240 acres on the north side of the Catawba River and a north branch of Waxhaw Creek granted July, 1753. Witnesses were William Davis, James Davis and Rebekkah Green. The will of Robert Davis was written in 1770 but no probate or recording date has been found. His will does not mention the place where he lives so it is possible he moved into South Carolina with his sons where he died, his will being recorded in Mecklenburg as that was where his land was located. If this is the case, he probably died between July, 1772 and April, 1773 when John and Moses Davis conveyed their land (see below). This appears to be the case because on the same day as the first deed, June 25, 1772, Robert Davis, Sr. of Long Cain Settlement in South Carolina conveyed land to James Davis (his son) being 200 acres on the north branch of Waxhaw Creek granted April 6, 1753. This deed was confirmed in the will of Robert Davis (see following). The Long Cain Settlement was in what became Abbeville District, SC.
The will of Robert Davis dated May 4, 1770 was recorded in Mecklenburg County, NC with no date. It bequeaths to son James, 200 acres where he now lives being lower end of my plantation joining James Walkup, 40 pounds and Negro Jude; to son Robert, Jr., 200 acres being middle of above tract, Negro Moll and large Bible; to son George, a dark bay mare; to son William the first volume of Pools Annotations; to son Moses the second volume; daughter Catherine to be maintained out of my estate; balance of estate to be divided among children except son-in-law Robert Caldwell to received 20 pounds only. Executors were Robert, Jr. and George Davis. Witnesses were John McCorkle, John Pickens and James Walkup. It appears Mildred Davis was dead before 1770. From this we have:

VIII. John Davis??
married Mary ________ (see following)
On April 19, 1773, a deed was made in Mecklenburg County, NC where John Davis and wife Mary and Moses Davis and wife Jean of Craven County, SC sold to Robert Davis of Mecklenburg County, NC for 100 pounds land adjoining Beards on both sides of Waxhaw Creek 380 acres granted September 12, 1752. Witnesses were George Davis, John Pickens and John Davis. It is not known who John Davis was unless he was a son not named in the will of Robert Davis, Sr. in 1770.
James Davis was born c1742 in Augusta County, VA. He moved with his parents and brothers and sisters to Anson County, NC when he was about ten years old. On May 15, 1762, James Davis was granted 480 acres on both sides of Sugar Creek in Mecklenburg County, NC. About 1770, he married probably in Mecklenburg County to Rebecca Pickens, daughter of Israel and Martha Pickens, whose widowed mother had moved her family from Virginia to North Carolina after the death of Israel Pickens in 1749. Due to the Davis and Pickens families' association over many years, James and Rebecca had probably known each other all their lives. On June 25, 1772, Robert Davis, Sr. of Long Cain Settlement in South Carolina conveyed to James Davis, his son, for 5 shillings, 200 acres in Mecklenburg County, NC on the north branch of Waxhaw Creek. Witnesses were William Davis and John McElroy. This deed in confirmed in the will of Robert Davis dated 1770.
The will of James Davis dated April 9, 1805 was recorded in Mecklenburg County, NC. It bequeaths to wife Rebecca one Negro man, one black horse named Dolphin, all stock of cattle, bedding and household & kitchen furniture; to my two sons Robert and Israel my plantation where I live to be divided equally-Robert to have that part where he now lives and Israel to have the part where I live with a life interest to wife; wagon to be sold and $50 to son Israel and balance to wife; to son Israel one sowel filly 2 years old and all platation tools; sheep and hogs to be equally divided between son Israel and my wife; to daugther Martha Craig $2; to daughter Sarah Nisbet $2; to daughter Margaret Davis $2; to daughter Jennet Baker $2; to daughter Rebecca Baker $2; to grandson James Davis Craig my saddle; executors to be John Nisbet and wife Rebecca. From this we have:

VII. Rebecca Davis
born c1786 in Mecklenburg County, NC
married December 16, 1804 in Mecklenburg County, NC to Samuel Baker
Israel Pickens Davis, son of James and Rebecca (Pickens) Davis, was born April 22, 1784 in Mecklenburg County, NC. He married December 26, 1803 in the Sardis Church Community in Mecklenburg County, NC to Sarah Nisbet, daughter of William and Jemima (Baker) Nisbet. The Nisbets lived across the line in Lancaster County, SC but appear to have attended Tirzah Presbyterian (ARP) Church with the Davises. Tirzah ARP Church was first built in 1804 and later rebuilt in 1815 near the state line in Union County, NC. It had many members from both North and South Carolina. The board of elders for Tirzah in 1831 consisted of William Nisbet, George McWhorter, Stephen Billue, Robert Davis, David Lathan, Robert Nelson, George McCain, David Walkup, Samuel Baker, George A. Nisbet, Thomas W. Huey and Alexander J. Nisbet. James and Rebecca (Pickens) Davis are said to be buried here although only Rebecca's grave is marked.
Israel Pickens Davis made his home in Mecklenburg County, NC where all of his children were born. The 1820 Census of Mecklenburg page 199 shows him with 4 males under 10, 4 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45.
In 1826, Israel Pickens Davis left Mecklenburg County, NC with Rev. Richard Peoples prospecting for a new home in the state of Tennessee. The following account is given of their journey:
"The traveling companion of Mr. Davis was my father, Richard Peoples, of Mecklenburg County, NC. The two friends had traveled through the mountains of Western North Carolina to West Tennessee as far as the Chickasaw Bluffs, the site of the present city of Memphis. On their return home they stopped on a Saturday night at the home of their mutual friend and former neighbor, John Matthews, to rest and to resume their journey on Monday morning. But here, far from his home and family (he was married and had a family at the time), Mr. Davis was taken seriously ill, and after some days, in spite of the tender care of friends true and tried, he died, and his remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near by, there to rest until the resurection. My father resumed the journey homeward alone, taking with him the horse and saddle and other valuables of his deceased friend. Some years afterwards the wife and family removed to Maury County, TN and settled near Bigbyville and became associated with the A. R. Presbyterian Church. James Davis, his son, was a ruling elder in Hopewell Church at this place and was buried near his father some 83 year ago." (written in November, 1909)
The following stone is found in the John Matthews Cemetery six miles south of Columbia, TN:
Sacred to the memory of Israel P. Davis, of Waxhaw, Mecklenburg County, NC, who on returning home from visiting the Western District of Tennessee, departed this life November 5, 1826, aged 45 years.
By 1840, the family had moved to Maury County, TN, some remaining there and some moving on to Lafayette County, MS and into Arkansas. The family Bible of Samuel Pickens Davis lists the following entry under marriages: "Israel P. Davis (son of James Davis & Rebecca (maiden name Pickens) to Sarah, daughter of Wm. Nisbet & Jane (maiden name Baker) Dec 26th A. D. 1803 of Mecklenburg, NC of Lancaster Dist. SC". From all this we have:
Israel Pickens Davis, son of James and Rebecca (Pickens) Davis
born April 22, 1784 in Mecklenburg County, NC

Samuel Pickens Davis was born May 30, 1817 in the Waxhaw Community in Mecklenburg County, NC, the son of Israel Pickens and Sarah (Nisbet) Davis. His father died when he was 9 years old leaving his mother with ten children to raise and care for. Samuel P. Davis was an A. R. Presbyterian Minister for nearly 60 years. His biography is quoted from the Centennial History of the ARP Church published in 1903 as follows:
"Samuel Pickens Davis, son of Israel Pickens and Sarah (Nisbet) Davis, was born May 30, 1817 in Waxhaw, Union County, NC. Studying awhile under Rev. R. C. Grier at Union Academy, he spent 1838 at Franklin College, Columbia, Tenn. (Maury County), 1839 in an academy near(by), and enter Erskine College in 1840, graduating 1842 in the first class. (Erskine College is in Due West, Abbeville County, SC). After a full course in Erskine Divinity Hall, the Second Presbytery granted him license on September 27, 1844. Preaching that winter in North Mississippi and Tennessee, he returned in May, 1845, and took in Erskine Hall a post graduate course. The next year was spent preaching at Harmony, Edgefield County, SC, except two months. The Synod sent him to north Mississippi in the fall of 1846, the Second Presbytery having ordained him March 28th preceding, and he was installed pastor of Ebenezer, Tippah County, MS and
