Alexander MCLARTY

(1730 - 1800)

Olde Mecklenburg (NC) General Quarterly, 1992, Volume 10, Number 2, page 38.

He came from Scotland to America in 1773 as evidenced by a church letter attesting to his honesty, etc. He is said to have been the great-grandson of Iver McLaverty who left Scotland for political reasons, unlike Alexander who left because of economic conditions.

Alexander McLarty is first found in North Carolina, having furnished produce from his farm to the Militia of North Carolina and South Carolina. In the Minutes of the Court of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Book 1 1774-1780, January Session 1780, he is assigned an orphan boy named Joseph Elliott as an apprentice to learn to be a "taylor." In the 1790 census of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, we find Alexander McLarty with 3 males and 4 females in the family. It appears he had only one son so possibly the other male was the Joseph Elliott named above.

Alexander McLarty married Barbara McNaught as shown by her will probated in Mecklenburg County in 1811. He was not shown in the census of 1800 or 1810 and there is no record of a will or settling of his estate, nor has his grave been found.
