Benjamin Franklin ROBERTS

(29 Dec 1849 - 1 May 1928)

Benjamin Franklin Roberts, better known as "Doc", was the seventh child born to John Iverson and Crissa Barnett Roberts. Doc was born in Benton County, Alabama on December 28, 1949. At the age of three, he moved with his parents to Attala County, Mississippi. He married Mary Ann Furr on June 22, 1873. Mary Ann was born October 20, 1849, and was the daughter of Daniel and Lizzie Brandon Furr of Layfayette County, Mississippi. Doc and Mary Ann had nine children. Doc moved with two of his brothers in covered wagons to Hollandale, Mississippi. On the way to Hollandale, they had to pass through Panther Creek Swamp, North of Yazoo City. They tried to cross during the time that the water was up, and they were stranded there for several weeks when one of the brothers became sick with malaria. After farming in the Hollandale area for a while, the three brothers moved their families to the Satartia area of Yazoo County. Although a farmer most of his life, Doc was elected as Justice of the Peace of Beat 1, Yazoo County (1905-1916). In 1916 he was elected to the State Legislature, where he was to serve two terms. He served on the following committees: Appropriations; Mississippi Levees; Public Printing; Penitentiary and Pensions. Doc was known for his fairness and justice. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, Woodmen of the World, and the Columbian Woodmen. Benjamin Franklin Roberts died on May 1, 1928, and Mary Ann Furr Roberts died on July 11, 1936. They are buried in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.
