Death

One of the oldest and best known citizens of the city passed away last night, when Mr. W. A. Smith died at his home on North Union street. The announcement of his death was a distinct shock to his many friends throughout the city, for only yesterday morning he was out and the serious illness that came on him yesterday was not a matter of knowledge with the community. There was no better known citizen in Cabarrus county than Mr. Smith. Having spent all his life in this city and having been for so many years an active figure among Cabarrus activities he knew the people of the county fully and was by all people well known and most universally esteemed. Mr. Smith was one of the oldest citizens of the county. During recent years, he had not been so active as formerly, but despite his mature age his life was marked by an unusual energy, such as is rarely seen and has been an inspiration to many. William Alexander Smith was a native of Cabarrus county. He was in his eighty-second year, having been born July 22nd, 1828. On November 7th he was married to Miss Catherine Furr, of Cabarrus, who died in 1883. Surviving are seven children, Messrs. William M. and Quint E. of this city and Victor and John Smith, of Birmingham, three daughters, Mrs. H. N. Wells, of Andrews, Misses Jennie and Kate Smith, of Concord. One brother Mr. C. F. Smith, of the country, is living. From early manhood Mr. Smith made his home in this city. He was actively engaged in business here for many years. He was largely interested in mines and real estate and operated on a large scale. Smith was a member of the Presbyterian church for many years being a communicant of the First church this city and funeral services will be conducted from the church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock and the interment will follow at the city cemetery.
