Lavinia FURR

(5 Oct 1806 - 4 Nov 1891)

Also known as Levinia. Daniel and Lavinia lived on their plantation on the east side of Little Bear Creek about a mile east of St. Martin's Lutheran Church.

She was smart, witty, and had a good sense of humor. She was a rather frail woman of medium height. She, like the Efirds, was German (according to Efird) and their families spoke German in their homes.

One day the new pastor called unexpectedly about mealtime. As was the custom, they invited him to eat with them although no preparations for the meal had been made. They just had their customary country meal.

Eliza, Lavinia's sister, asked Lavinia in German, not knowing that the pastor also understood German, if she though the pastor was satisfied with the meal that they were serving him. Lavinia replied in German, "If he is a good man it is good enough for him, and if he is not a good man he doesn't need a good meal, but if it is good enough for us it should be good enough for him." The pastor replied in German, "The meal is fine. I am enjoying it a lot. It is good enough for me."

In her latter life, Lavinia went to live with her daughter, Eliza, who was also a widow. Eliza lived near Norwood in Stanly County, North Carolina. In the afternoon of November 4, 1891, Lavinia went outside the house to get a little sunshine and some exercise. She went into a nearby cotton field and picked some cotton into her apron. At the customary time she ate her supper. After supper she complained of being tired and went into a bedroom and laid down on the bed to rest with her clothes on. When she did not return after a considerable time, some of the family went to see about her. They found that she had died apparently from a heart attack.
