Notes
Death
Miami Shores, Florida - In rural Pineville, North Carolina, Alice was known as one of five daughters born to Dr. Henry Quincy Alexander and his second wife, the former school teacher Ethel Brinkley: Ruth, Margaret, Alice and the twins, Quincy and Nancy. Alice's father died when she was six. Despite her husband's premature death, the rural setting, the Great Depression in the 1930s and WWII, Alice's mother managed to send many daughters off to college. Alice excelled at her studies at Mitchell College (later absorbed by the University of North Carolina) and sports. She was known as "Ace" in basketball. In Miami, Florida she was known as Alice Furr, wife of prominent surgeon Dr. Walter E. Furr, and dedicated mother of his children: Jane Davis (Todd), Walter Furr (Cindy), William Furr (Jan) and James Furr (Cheryl). A resident of Miami Shores for 60 years, Alice attended Miami Shores Presbyterian Church, was a voracious reader, morning walker and a lover of animals. She had a quick, dry sense of humor. Alice was generous to those who knew her in terms of her thoughtfulness, financial support, pragmatism, and the most precious commodity of all- Alice gave you her time. Alice was lucky to have four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The family is grateful for the steadfast and unfailing love and support of her sisters, family friends Louise and Don White and to her neighbors for whom Alice was the closest mom and grandma to two generations growing up themselves. Alice was a splendid example of maturing with grace. Services will be in North Carolina. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. The Miami Herald, Miami, Florida, July 13, 2024
