Daniel Kenneth "Danny" FURR

(4 Jun 1952 - 15 Oct 2023)

Daniel K. Furr is one of El Paso’s newest citizens. He grew up in the business his grandfather, Roy K. Furr started 60 years ago. His father, Roy K. Furr Jr. is Furr's Super Markets president. Daniel Furr is assistant division manager here, working with A.R. “Chick” Arnold, who has been zone manager in El Paso for many years. He started his career eight years ago. “I worked for National Cash Register in high school,” he said. “I moved to Phoenix and worked for Furr's as produce manager, came back to Lubbock as produce buyer, then produce supervisor. “I was appointed assistant division manager in Lubbock and moved to El Paso about six months ago.” His wife, Kay, is from Pampa and the two met at Texas Tech. The biggest changes he's noted since he started are “front end service and elimination of store outs.” This, translated from store lingo means more and faster check-outs and larger inventories. He thinks it will be some time before the Universal Product Code will be fully operational. This concerns the little black stripes you’ve probably noticed on food items, and which, when passed over a scanner, will list the item and price and eventually will take the item off the inventories at the same time. “We installed one in Lubbock a year ago, successfully, but it's not saving as much time as we thought it would,” he said. ‘‘It helps in inventory control, though." He has a brother, Mike Furr, who's in the business too, as produce manager in Lubbock. Furr’s Cafeterias were started by his grandfather in Lubbock and the first worked so well, more were built. However, the cafeterias went public and formed a separate corporation. Although divorced from Furr's Super Markets, the family retains an interest and his uncle, Don Furr, is chairman of the board of the cafeterias. There are 80 Furr's Super Markets in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona and El Paso has nine of them. “I really like El Paso,” Furr said. “It's a lot like Phoenix. It took me about 15 minutes to get used to it.”
