Notes
Birth
Determining the Birth Date of Mary Catherine Wilkinson, wife of Thomas John RichardsFrom the marriage register, we learn that she was of full age (greater than 18) in March 1870, previously unmarried, and the daughter of Jessie Wilkinson, a shoemaker.
Various census records for the Thomas John Richards family imply different birth years for her. However, there are census records for the Jessie Wilkinson (shoemaker in Islington) family:
- 1841, female Martha, 5 months
- 1851, daughter Martha, age 10
- 1861 (Jesse's name mistakenly written as Joseph), not listed
- 1871, not listed
It's sensible that she was not listed with her father in 1871 because she had married the year before. Her absence from the 1861 census might have occurred because she worked/lived in someone else's house as a servant. This requires further study.
Given the information from the 1841 census (taken on the night of 6 June), it's clear that a child Martha was born after 6 December 1840 and before 6 January 1841. The possibility that she died young and another child given the same name can be discarded by the subsequent census data.
The 1900 US census asked for month/year of birth, to which she answered Dec 1850. Even if she were vainly rounding the year of birth, it is unlikely that she would change the day on which she celebrated her birth. So, we can take this record as partial confirmation.
I conclude that her most likely date of birth is December 1840 and that dates suggested by other documents are simply the result of rounding her age down. It's possible that her family and even her husband did not know her actual date of birth.
Using this information, further research reveals a baptism record, dated 21 Jan 1841, showing her birth as occurring on 30 Dec 1840.
Birth
Supported by information on interment certificate and on death certificate. However, other census statements support other dates:
1875 NY Census > 1845
1880 US Census > 1844
1905 NY Census > 1847
1910 US Census > 1845
The 1900 census required the person to state a specific month and year: Dec 1850.
However, the baptism certificate that appears to be appropriate is date 21 Jan 1841.
Residence
Noted in marriage recordMarriage
But in the 1900 census, she says she's been married for 31 years.Middle name is spelled "Catharine" in the source record.
Residence (family)
I can't find any 1871 census record for either Thomas or Martha. It's possible that they emigrated before the census.Immigration
The 1905 New York census says that she has been in-country for 32 years.Residence
In the 1910 census, there is also a Martha Richards (age 62) in Saratoga. However, she states that she and her parents were born in NY. So she could not be Martha Catharine Wilkinson.Endnotes
