Miles DENT

(3 Jun 1823 - 18 Mar 1889)

Mr. Dent built. in 1865, one of the first grist-mills in Gibson township, and in 1866 built a small water-power mill. In 1881 he built a steam mill, the capacity of which is 30,000 feet of lumber per day. He also does a flourishing business in the store at Benezette, Elk county, where he resides, and where he is recognized as a practical busi ness man.

Property

The land included a fine stand of virgin pine on Bennett's Branch. The house, the largest of its day, was called the "Dents' Mansion".

Occupation

Owned several thousand acres of timberland extending up to Dent's Run. In 1870, he began to put in spars. He also conducted a store, a grist mill, a sawmill and a blacksmith shop. He owned several houses in the village where some of his employees lived. He also owned a farm with a herd of milk cows.

Miscellaneous

Dent was an extraordinarily strong man, 6'-2", 200 pounds, with very large hands.

Death
