Daniel S BRYANT Sr

(Abt 1800 - 1884)

Biography

Birth

Daniel Bryant was born about 1801 in Prince William County, Virginia. Various census records suggest dates in the range of 1800 to 1804.

He may have been the son of William Bryant and Jane Wroe. Turner's annotated 1870 census [1] shows him as the son of "Jane Bryant." The 1860 U.S. census shows a Jane Bryant, aged 83, living in the residence of a Bernard Bryant, immediately following the census entry for Daniel Bryant.

Marriage

On 28 Dec 1822, he married Nancy Ann Pearson in Prince William County, Virginia. The marriage was performed by Rev. Jas. Reid. [2] [3]

Some secondary sources assert that he had first married a woman named "Mary." This seems to be based on an entry by Turner [4] that reads "Bryant, Daniel 24 PWC s/o David/Mary to Sarah Fair __ PWC 9 Feb 1860." This might be evidence that Daniel, Jr., who married Sarah Fair, was the child of a woman named Mary. However, there are obvious problems. The name of the father is shown as "David" rather than "Daniel" (possibly a simple error in typing) and the implied birth date of Daniel, Jr. is 1836, well after Daniel, Sr. married Nancy Ann Pearson. One might consider the hypothesis that Daniel married Mary after he married Nancy. However, the 1870 census shows him living with "Ann" and the 1840, 1860, and 1880 censuses show him living with "Nancy".

It should also be noted that the 1880 census record on Ancestry has been transcribed and indexed as "Mary". However, upon examination, it clearly reads "Nancy".

Children

Five children are generally attributed to Daniel and Nancy, all born in Prince William County:

George, about 1829
Mary J., about 1832
Daniel S., between 1835 and 1840
Julia Ann, about 1843
Matilda, about 1846
Some secondary sources suggest an older child, William, born Dec 1825, also in Prince William.

Residence

The family lived as farmers, apparently tenant farmers, in Prince William County. Beginning with the 1870 census, their location is shown as Manassas, but that may not indicate a relocation, but rather than evolution and development of the area. (Manassas was incorporated as such in 1873. [5]) For some or all of his life, he may have lived on the estate known as "Tudor Hall." [1] [6]
