Nehemiah ABBOTT

U.S. Congressman. He studied law at the Litchfield Law School Connecticut, was admitted to the bar in 1836 and commenced to practice law at Calais, Maine. Moving to Columbus, Mississippi, in 1839, he continued the practice of law and returned to Maine in 1840. There he practiced of law and was a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1842-43, 45). In 1857, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. Not a candidate for reelection, he was Mayor of Belfast, Maine, (1865-66) and practiced of law until his death at age 73. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
