Thomas Haywood was born about 1756 in St. Mary’s county of the Maryland colony. Although we do not know his parents, we do know that the Haywoods (and variants such as Harward, Howard, and Haward) formed an old family in Maryland that was extensively intermarried with others.

We know that he served during the Revolutionary War, but there are few records of his service and the details are sparse. On 3 July 1776, he mustered as a member of Capt. Uriah Forrest’s company of Col. Smallwood’s Maryland regiment. Smallwood’s regiment served as part of General Washington’s “flying camp”—a strategic reserve for the Continental Army. Smallwood’s regiment saw service for the duration of the war from the Battle of Brooklyn Heights in 1776 to the Carolinas campaign of 1780-81. However, arms were scarce and not all of the regiment could be provided with weapons except by stripping the militia. Because the militia was now disarmed, the Maryland Council of Safety determined that part of the regiment should stay behind. Forrest’s company, with Haywood, remained to defend Maryland. The company expelled Lord Dunmore’s fleet from its landing on St. George’s Island in St. Mary’s county. In December, the company rejoined Smallwood, probably in time for the Battle of White Plains. Presumably, Haywood was with them, but we have no specific evidence of his service.

We have evidence that: on 3 July 1776, he mustered with Forrest’s company; [1] in 1832, the Maryland General Assembly passed a resolution granting him a pension; [2] and in 1841, he was still receiving the pension. [3] [4]

In 1778, he, as did many, took an oath of allegiance to Maryland, hence forsaking allegiance to the King of England. [5]

On 16 October 1781, he married Mary Shermantine. The marriage is recorded in both the All Faith Parish, [6] and at St. Andrews Episcopal Church [7] [8] [9] in California, St. Mary’s county. They had four children: Louisa, Thomas, John, and Joseph.

He died in St. Mary’s county in 1845.
