The parentage of this John Bryant has not yet been established, but it is possible that he was
descended from the John Bryant who d. in Cohannack (Taunton), MA on Apr. 28, 1638 [will
abstract in NEHGR, 4:36]. In his will, proved June 17, 1638, this John Bryant bequeathed to
his son John all his goods and chattels, excepting a platter and a bottle which he gave to
Richard Paul. Paul was to take charge of the property of his son until John came of age. We
find mention of a John Bryant of Taunton in Plymouth court records, the first clear reference
being on June 3, 1652, when he was presented at court "for exchanging of a musket for a
fowling piece with the Indians" [Plym. Col. Rec., 3:10]. On Dec. 6, 1653 it was ordered that a
cow belonging to him be appraised, which appraisal was completed before Mar. 7, 1654 [Plym. Col. Rec., 3:42, 3:45]. A John Bryant was admitted a freeman on June 6, 1654, and another on June 8, 1655, one of whom was probably the John Bryant of Taunton [Plym. Col. Rec., 3:48, 3:77]. John Bryant was listed as a freeman of Taunton on May 29, 1670, and again early in 1684 [Plym. Col. Rec., 5:276, 8:205]. John Bryant was surveyer of highways for Taunton on June 1, 1675, and again on June 2, 1685 [Plym. Col. Rec., 5:166, 6:166].

The first clear reference to the John Bryant who m. Abigail Bryant (other than the record of their marriage in 1665) is from June 3, 1668, when Edward Gray was presented for "using reviling speeches to John Bryant, the son in law to Steven Bryant, of Plymouth, on the Lords day, as soone as they came out of the meeting" [Plym. Col. Rec., 4:187]. John was fined for an exactly similar action on Mar. 2, 1669 [Plym. Col. Rec., 5:16]. It's apparent that this John Bryant was not of the line of John Bryant, Sr. of Plymouth (who had a son John of his own, called "John, Jr." in court documents), or of the line of Stephen Bryant (whose daughter he m.). Further research is required to ascertain whether he was related to the Bryants of Taunton.
