Individual Details
John COTTLE
(7 Sep 1675 - 30 Oct 1705)
Sometime prior to 1700, the Cottles moved from Nantucket to the island now called “Martha’s Vineyard”—specifically, the town of Tisbury, which is now in Dukes County. [5]
John was a “husbandman”—a farmer [6] —and lived there until his death on 30 Oct 1705. [7]
Apparently, he died intestate. Administration of the estate was granted on 2 November 1705, but distribution did not occur for decades, 5 April 1726. [8]
At some point, he married Jane Look, sometimes called Jean and Looke or Locke or other variations. Many secondary sources and compilations date this event as occurring in 1700, but there does not seem to be any primary evidence of the date. [9] The location can be presumed to be Tisbury because her parents’ family moved there about 1685.
