Elias KEYES

"Elias was born in Chelmsford, and was perhaps married elsewhere, as, although we find no record of his marriage in Chelmsford, we find that of the birth of the two elder children. The record of these two children of Elias and Mary is also found in Ashford, Conn., together with that of their other children. An Elias Keyes was one of the original proprietors of Londonderry, New Hampshire, which was settled in 1719, by a colony of Presbyterians from the vicinity of the city of Londonderry, in the north of Ireland, to which place their ancestors had emigrated about a century before from Scotland. They came to New England in the summer of 1718, and applied to the government of Mass., for the grant of a township, and were allowed to select a place for their location. Having selected Londonderry, sixteen families accompanied by their pastor, took possession of the place and in 1720 purchased the Indian title. If the Elias mentioned as having been there from 1720 to 1735, emigrated with the party from Ireland, who are his descendants? If not one of the emigrants, it is possible that Elias, the son of Solomon, prospected in the wilds of New Hampshire, previous to his removal to Ashford, Conn. It is also possible that Elias, son of Elias of Sudbury, of whose settlement, wife or children we know nothing, might have taken up land in Londonderry, and lived there those fifteen years. He would have been more than fifty years old at that time. It is curious, that although Ward mentions that Elias had a family in Marlboro', between the years 1696 and 1702, he does not give names or dates."
