Individual Details

John A. VAN KEUREN

(Abt 1918 - Bef 29 Nov 1972)

Why is his surname Van Keuren?

His funeral notice does not list any family.
His 1940 draft card lists "Mrs. Elizabeth Van Kuren" as his mother.
In the 1920 census of John and Emma (Kilventon), a child "John Jr." is listed as their son, age 2, despite the fact that the putative mother was age 53.
Also note The (Troy) Times Record, 6 Jul 1950, p. 18: "Patrick Augustus Maloney ... died last night [5 Jul 1950]... Surviving are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Maloney, and a nephew, John A. Van Kuren"

It seems clear that he was the illegitimate child of Elizabeth C. and was claimed as a child by her parents, John and Emma,, in the 1920 census.
