Death
Richard was killed in World War II. He was aboard the SS Leopold, aU.S. troop ship bound from England to France when it was sunk by a
German submarine. There were approximately 5000 men on board; only
237 were rescued. He was awarded a Purple Heart posthumously.
His brother Dale had been with him in England just a week or so before
his death. Dale was on his way to France where he served as a medic
in the 82nd General Hospital throughout the war.
