Notes
Birth
Paul Stevens was born in a refugee camp in Germany where his parents had fled from Latvia when the Russians were invading. His birth name was Pauls Sihgailis. He took the name Stevens because he had heard the name and liked it.Paul's older brother and a twin were also born in the refugee camp. Both died there during an epidemic of disease, either tuberculosis or diphtheria.
Marriage
Paul had been married previously and had two sons by that marriage.Death
Paul was in apparent good health until 11 days before his death. He was diagnosed with Wilson's granulomatosis which was the cause of his death.Emigration
Paul's family emigrated from the refugee camp in Germany to Great Britain and lived there for several years. Paul received his early education there.Later, the family emigrated to Canada.
Immigration
Paul came to the U.S. without papers. His parents had not taken British citizenship when the family lived in Great Britain so Paul was, literally, a man without a country. In 1988 he became a citizen of the United States. He was always very grateful for the country to which he now belonged.Endnotes
