He came with a group of Puritans in the 1630's. He paid the transportation costs of 5 of them and received a patent for 50 acres each.Event-Misc
He recived 300 acres on the western branch of the Elizabeth River in payment for paying transportation costs fro 5 people from England to VA.Event-Misc
Gov. Bekeleu of VA prohibited the practice of the Puritan religion in VA in 1644. The Puritans were required to attend and pay tithes to the Anglican Church.Event-Misc
The high sheriff brought 8 members of the Puritan congregation including Elizabeth's brother, Thomas, to court for refusing to attend the Anglican Church. They were ordered to conform to the Anglican church by Oct., 1650. This started an exodus of 300 Puritans to MD where Lord Baltimore had obtained a charter and established a religiously tolerant colony in 1634. Maryland's Act of Toleration passed on 4-21-1649 allowed freedom of worship to Puritans who migrated to MD.Thomas and his family and their servant, John Dennis, were part of this migration to MD in 1649.

Thomas acquired 590 acres on the west side of the Rhodes River in the East River Hundred and named the property, Sparrow's Nest.Event-Misc
After the treaty with the Susquehannock Indians in 1652 more land north of Sparrow's Nest was available. Thomas purchased 600 acres called Sparrow's Rest at the mouth of Broad Creek and running south to what is still known as Sparrow's Point. He purchased another 200 acres called South Canton.Event-Misc
Elizabeth Harris, the first Quaker missionary or "Publisher of the Truth", preached at the West River Meeting House in 1656. The Sparrow family converted to the Quaker religion at this meeting.Event-Misc
Thomas Sparrow, Jr. became a ward and employee of Jonas Green in Annapolis. He carved the book seal first used in 1765 on the title page of Rev. Thomas Bacon's "Compilation of the Laws of Maryland". This seal was used until 1793 on the editions of the session laws of the Assembly. The Assembly selected it as the official state seal, known as the Sparrow Seal. The Latin motto, "Crescite et Multiplicamini" (Increase and Multiply) is on the seal. Thomas and Elizabeth's great great grandson, Thomas Sparrow V, who was a silversmith, made some official state seals for the state of MD which are displayed in the Maryland State House in Annapolis.Endnotes
