Nadie Lee Matthews

Nadie Lee Matthews Morris, age 83, of Ithaca, New York, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, in New Jersey with her family by her side. She was born in Ravenna, Ohio to Herbert and Nadie Lee Matthews.

She attended Hiram College (Ohio) where she studied music and English. In 1946, she married her college sweetheart, James O. Morris, and came to Ithaca when he became a Cornell ILR Professor. Upon returning from a four-year visiting professorship in Chile, the family moved to Cayuga Heights at which point she began a long career as a librarian at the Tompkins County Public Library.

She was an avid reader, gardener, and bird lover, and enjoyed singing and listening to music. Nadie Lee took great pride in her Cherokee Indian heritage. Her greatest joy was spending time with family. Following her husband's death, she fulfilled her dream of traveling the world.

She is survived by four children, James, Steven, Lisa Kapill, and Patricia Witmer; seven grandchildren; her brother, Mehlin Matthews; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 with calling hours at 10:30, Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Bangs Funeral Home, Ithaca, New York. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Burial to follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
