NORTON, Va. - Chester Maggard, 71, died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1997) at U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville.
A former resident of Burdine, Ky., and Kingsport, Mr. Maggard had recently made his home in Bean Station.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a former member of Jenkins Masonic Lodge, Jenkins, Ky., and the American Legion, Kingsport. Mr. Maggard was of the Pentecostal faith.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Bertha Stevens, Maggie Barnette, Madelyn Sturgill and Charlotte Maggard; and a brother, Lee Maggard.
Surviving are his wife, Germaine Maggard, Bean Station; four daughters, Lana Lucas and Debbie Lawson, both of Orlando, Fla., Brenda Fleming, Burdine, Ky., and Sandy Johnson, Cleveland, Tenn.; two sons, Larry Maggard, Pikeville, Ky., and Chester Maggard Jr., Tunnell Hill, Ga.; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, Bonnie Walters, Waynesboro, Pa., Mary Goolsby, Andover, Va., Vivian Boykins, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Linda Robinson, Norton, Va.; and a brother, Clyde Maggard, McRoberts, Ky.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hagy Funeral Home, Norton, Va. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ben Patterson officiating.
Graveside rites will be conducted at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens by Norton V.F.W. Post No. 4301 and Wise D.A.V. Chapter No. 56.
