Principal documentation for these persons is the book "Captain Edmond du Chastel and the Colonial Casteels An American History", Copyright 2010, edited by Marjorie O'Brien Casteel, Debbie Cannon, and Vicki Casteel. The 1880 US Census for a son, Joseph Casteel Sr., indicates that his father was born in Pennsylvania. Member Cherie has indicated that John’s father Joseph’s Will and other court documents are available. At least one document lists John as “John Joseph Henry Samuel Casteel”, another for daughter Elizabeth just as “John Henry Casteel”; I think the other names probably really belong to his brothers—he had brothers named Joseph and Samuel.
Most family trees list it as Whitemarsh, Bladen, NC, but all his siblings born is VA. His son, Joseph Marion Casteel reports on his 1880 Census that John was born in PA & 2 other sons, Freeland & George report his birth place was VA on their 1880 Census.
