Dennis Cadwell has suggested that Thomas is the son of Walter and Hannah Cadwell from Tenderton, Scotland.


Historians differ on the nationality of Thomas Cadwell. He was one of the first settlers in New England who had reached the area near Boston in Dorchester, Massachucetts. It is believed he was born about 1620.

Some thought him to be a Scotsman and others believe he was Welch, and had decended from ancestors of northern Ireland.

He migrated to the Connecticut River area and settled at what is now Hartford in 1636. He had traveled with a band of members of the Newton Congregational Church led by Reverend Thomas Hooker.

The first record that has been located for this Thomas Cadwell is for the purchase of the land in Hartford, Connecticut that later became his place of residence on 9 March 1652, from the heirs of Thomas Scott for 45 pounds.

He received original land grants of 1639 and married the daughter of Francis Tough and Deacon Edward Stebbins. She was Elizabeth Stebbins, the widow of Robert Wilson, and had two young sons, John and Samuel Stebbins.

He and his family lived adjacent to the home lot of his father-in-law, Edward Stebbins, on the corner of what is now Front and State Streets, Hartford, Connecticut. In 1669 he exchanged land with the City of Hartford. He was a farmer, chimney viewer, and, in 1662, a constable.

Thomas operated a private ferry across the Connecticut River for a number of years. At a town meeting, 22 December 1681, the necessity of having a public ferry at Hartford was considered. A committee was appointed to agree with a suitable person to keep this ferry for seven years. Thomas Cadwell was selected to operate this public ferry. As his warehouse was at the landing and his house, after 1652, at the southwest corner of State and Front streets, this service would have been convenient for him. His agreement dated 31 March 1682 states that he was "to maintain a sufficient boate for the passage of horse and man; a canoe good and sufficient to carry over a single person".

Thomas Cadwell was thus the lessee of the ferry privilege though not necessarily the ferryman. He agreed that it should be carefully attended. His widow, Elizabeth, succeeded him for one year and then his son, Thomas. (See " The Memorial History of Hartford County...," by J. Hammond Trumbull).
Thomas Cadwell died on 9 Oct 1694 in Hartford. He left a will dated 11 Feb 1691/2 that was probated on 14 Nov 1694. The inventory of his estate was reported on 8 Nov 1694.

Thomas was the father of ten children with Elizabeth: Mary, Edward, Thomas, William Edmond, Mathew, Abigail, Elizabeth, Samuel, Hannah and Mehitable.
