Duncan McKellar

Duncan McKel|ar (1810 - 1866)

Duncan McKellar was born September 3, 1810 and baptized on September 1 1, 1810.4 He was the 5th of 6 children born to Duncan McKellar and Henrietta Laird of Rentrewshire, Scotland. Like his father he became a hand loom weaver. Duncan became a prominent resident of Paisley, Scotland and was connected with that industry which made the city famous— the manufacture of Paisley Shawls. He perfected the weaving trade in his own workshop. On the 9th and 10th of June 1838, the proclamations for the marriage of Duncan McKellar and Elizabeth Brodie were entered into the parish registers of Abbey, Paisley and Middle Parish Paisley.2~3 (The city of Paisley was divided into four parishes - Paisley High, Low, Middle and
Abbey). His wife, belonged to a prominent family and Clan, daughter of James Brodie and Janet Christie, born September 5, 1819 in Paisley, Scotland.1 The union of Duncan McKellar and Elizabeth Brodie gave rise to 5 children, namely; John Christie (b.1839), James Brodie (b.1841), and Janet (b.1847) all born in Paisley, while Duncan
(b.1848) and Elizabeth (b.1854) were born in Glasgow. All 5 children immigrated to America and changed their family name to Kehlor during the mid to late 1800s. They dropped the “Mc" prefix and added a middle initial "M."

ln 1848, Duncan McKellar and family gave up the weaving trade and moved to Glasgow, where Duncan became a wine and spirit merchant. By the 1861 Census the family was living at 37 Morrison Street, Govan, Glasgow, with only Janet (age 16), Duncan (age 14) and Elizabeth (age10), living at home. The sons, John Christie and James Brodie, had already left for America to seek their fortunes. Duncan McKellar, wine and spirit dealer, married to Elizabeth Brodie, died January 7, 1866
at 25 Paisley Road, Glasgow, at age 53 (in actuallity age 55). He was the son of Duncan McKellar, hand loom weaver deceased, and Henrietta Laird (maiden name) deceased. The cause of death was listed as disease of brain -4 days. The death certificate informant was Duncan McKellar, his son. Duncan Sr. outlived his wife, Elizabeth Brodie McKellar, by one year.
