Elias Friedrich Schmersahl
(2 Aug 1719 - 16 Apr 1775)
From Kurt Schmersahl
He was the preacher in Germany who received his Ph.d. and wrote the books...... Look him up on the internet. I have the woodcut for him.
Elias Friedrich Schmersahl was born April 2, 1719. His father (A.J. Schmersahlen) was a cantor and an organist for the Lutheran Church where the ruler of Cella went to church. He brought French music to the church. Elias’ mother was Marie Christine Stockman (daughter of the Mayor of Dannenberg). Elias’ father died in 1723; his mother in 1725. He was then reared by Johann Konrad Boetticher. Elias had a passion for poetry and wrote much poetry. He was a member of the Latin Society in Jena, and studied metaphysics under Johann Peter Reusch. He wrote Latin and French treatises. He earned his doctorate at the University of Jena. He became an Army preacher and married Catharina Rudov and they had three sons. He had a second wife. Julius August Wagenmann wrote his biography. Elias wrote many, many books. Most of them talk about hell because most of the Lutherans during this time were believing only that God was loving. They did not believe in a fiery Hell. Elias tried to CHANGE their beliefs. I have all kinds of his stuff that my German cousin, Kurt Schmersahl (now deceased) gave me including lots more genealogy and the woodcut.
