Nathaniel Wheeler

(1834 - 1910)

There are definitely some problems with the family of Nathaniel as given to me from a descendant.

In 1860, he was no longer living in his parents household. He may not have yet been married. I found two possibilities - back in Morgan Co IN was a Nathen Wheeler, age 22, b. IN, a farm hand on the farm of Thomas Painter and in Grayson Co TX was a "Mat." Wheeler, age 22, doing farm labor for Wm C. Corethers, but said born in MO.

1865 Kansas State Census. Timberhill, Bourbon County, Hh 331
N. Wheeler, 33, male, Farmer, b. IN
H. Wheeler, 20, female, b. IN
A. Wheeler, 3, male, b. Ark. (Alonzo?)
O. Wheeler, 1, female, b. Kan. (Olivia?)

1870 Census. Van Buren, Crawford Co AR. Hh 387. "Mat" Wheeler, age 35, born in IN. Jane, age 38, b. Arkansas. Arleda, 8 year old female, L. A. 6 year old male. Chas. age 4, and Rosa age 2. All the children born in Arkansas.

1880 Census. Benton, Newton Co MO. Hh 208. Nathaniel Wheeler, age 46, born in Indiana. Hulda is now the wife, age 30, also born in Indiana - quite possibly a second wife, or was she Hulda Jane or is her age wrong? Children are Alonzo age 18 born AR, Olivia age 16, born in Kansas, Charles age 15, and Rosette age 11, both born in Arkansas, and last is Nathaniel age 2 and born in Missouri. Hulda is too young too be the mother of most of the children. I suspect she is the mother only of Nathaniel age, 2. Charles and Rosette/Rosa match up to the youngest children in 1870, Where was Alonzo in 1870? And how did Arleda become Olivia - or did they simply have the names and sex of the first two children confused.
His parents were living next door.

I found the following marriage record in Crawford Co. Nathaniel Wheeler, age 59 [born about 1833) married Elizabeth Hatfield, age 36, on 14 Nov 1892. Both said to be residing in Crawford Co. License was dated the 7th of November. They were married by G. M. Spear, a Deacon in the ME Church South.

By 1900, two of his sons were living in Crawford Co AR, but one of them had two young children born in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. That's where I found Nathaniel that year. The page is very difficult to read:
Nathaniel Wheeler, b. May 1832, age 68, married 7 years. Born IN as were his parents; a farmer
Letha? B. wife, b. Dec 1856, age 43. She had 7 children, 4 of which are living. Born Iowa, parents b. KY
Clide Hatfield, step son, b. Apr 1884, age 16, b. TX
Mattie L. Hatfield, step dau, b. Nov 1885, age 14, b. TX

The 1910 Census was taken 20 May 1910 and Nathaniel appeared to still be living at that date. Roland Twp, Sequoyah Co, OK, Hh 176
Nathaniel Wheeler, age 76, married twice, the present time for 17 years. Born IN, parents b. KY
Elisabeth, wife, age 52, also married twice, 7 children - 3 living [they would have been Hatfields], b. Iowa, parents b. KY

FindAGrave has the picture of a stone for Nathaniel, Dora Cemetery, Crawford Co. The stone appears to be much more recent than his death. The dates are 1823 - 1910. He surely was not born that early. There is no entry for him in History of Headstones, when the cemeteries were inventoried in the early 1970's.
There is also a picture of Huldah's stone - much older.
"Hulda, Wife of N. Wheeler, Died Feb. 27, 1891, aged 52 years" [or born in 1840 - an age that does not agree with the census.
