Individual Details
William Jefferson "Buck" Asbill
(1861 - 16 Mar 1937)
"Buck" is the same as William J. found on the 1880 Census. The Asbill Newsletter refers to "Uncle George" and "Uncle Buck" in the same paragraph. And also says that Uncles Buck, George and Minter were the first of the Asbills to leave Crawford County about 14 years before Oklahoma became a state. Their father and mother, John Henry and Hannah, followed about 1895. Since they were not part of the Cherokee Nation, they had to pick up their mail across the line in Uniontown, AR until Oklahoma statehood. Etta Asbill Benge was a legal resident in Oklahoma Territory as the wife of Obie Benge.
Buck married Laura Boyd, granddaughter of David Boyd, said to be the first white man to set foot in the area of Van Buren circa 1818. They were married 25 Oct 1891 - buck was 28 and Laura was 16.; she died 6 Feb 1894 in Indian Territory, at the birth of her second son.
