Hiram Gifford

(19 Sep 1816 - 19 Jan 1897)

1860 Census. Hiram is listed as age 40, Lois as 18, Elizabeth as 16 and Europa as 25. Careful study of this page shows the ages to have been recorded one line "off". Hiram was actually 44 - the age recorded for his mother immediately above. Lois was 40, not Hiram. Elizabeth was 18 and Europa was 16. Living with the family was Michael Burke doing farm labor and Mary Allen as domestic. They were both born in Ireland.

1870. Hiram & Lois were living with his parents, or vice verson. Elizabeth 28 and Europa 26, still at home - apparently the only children.

1880. Hiram, Farmer, age 63. Now lived in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, NY. Lois was 56. Elizabeth 38 and Europa, a teacher, age 36. Mary McNulty, age 30 was a servant. She was born in NY, but her parents born in Ireland. Jonathan Hoag, age 83, marked as "uncle" and certainly a brother to Hiram's mother Anna Hoag. was age 83. Jonathan was born in NY as were his parents.
