James Waters

(Aug 1568 - 2 Feb 1617)

James Waters, born August 29, 1568 in London, England; died February 2, 1616/17 in London, England. He was the son of Henry Waters and Dorothy Stephenson. He married Phebe Manning 1592 in England.
Phebe Manning, born Abt. 1566 in Downe, Kent, England; died Abt. 1642 in Salem, MA. She was the daughter of 32706. George Manning and 32707. Joan Wallis.
Notes for James Waters:
one possibility appears in the parish register of St. Giles
Cripplegate, London; this is the chistening of James, son of Henry Waters, on 29 Aug 1568. There are two marriages for Henry Waters listed in other parish registers. One is to Dorothie Stephenson in Jun 1563 at St. Mary Abchurch. Henry had a dau.,
Mary, who was bp. there in Apr 1564. The second marriage is to Agnes Mounck on 9 Aug 1565 at St. Mary Magdellan, Milk Street. Of course, these Henry Waters may be 3 different men.
He is first mentioned in the records of the Ironmongers' Company of London in 1586 when at a Quarter Court meeting held on 26 Apr, William Burner or Bourne paid two shillings, six pence for presenting James as his apprentice. P. 6-James prob. m.
Phebe Manning, dau of George Manning, soon after he became a freeman. Evidence of this conclusion is contained in the will of Phebe's brother, William Manning of London. It was written on 27 Feb 1596 and he bequeaths to his sister, Phebe Waters, five
pounds of lawfull money of England to be paid unto her within one year after his death, "and if she shall far long live Jacob's the same to return unto my executors hereunder named." William mentions his brother, John and Thomas as well as cousin
Elizabeth Lambert. The will was proved in 1608. Phebe Manning's father, George Manning of Downe, Kent, died in 1583. His will mentions his wife, Johan, and sons Thomas, John, George, William and Peter. He mentions his daughters, Elizabeth Greene, Anne
Brownhall, Katherine Underhill, Joan Welch, Dorothie and Phebe. Dorothie was to get 30 pounds when she married. Phebe was to be sent to school under the tuition of Dorothie during the term of 6 years and was to receive
£30 when she married. He mentions brothers, John and Henry. The overseers of the will were Richard Brownhall, Hugh Underhill and Griffin Greene. Gives some of the ancestry of the Manning family and the connection to Geoffrey Chaucer.
p.8-In the parish Clerk's Memos, William Plasse is named as scavenger
for High Street in Dec 1595. His first banns to marry Marjerie Smith were read 4 Jul 1596; the second banns on 11 Jul, the 3d banns on 17 Jul and they were married 19 Jul 1596. "Mar Plas, dau of William Plas, a gunmaker dwelling in East Smithfield, was
christened 5 Jun 1597." Nathaniel Plasse, son of William Plasse, gunmaker, was christened 16 Nov 1600. In the parish manuscript 9220 there is a listing for Ruthe Plasse, dau of William who was christened 25 Dec 1603. This Ruthe could be Rejoice who m.
Richard Waters, son of James. "Margarie Plasse, wife of William Plasse, a snaphaunce maker for gunns, was buried 4 Aug 1618."
WFT3, ped #6290 seems to think that the above marriages of James Waters to Dorothy Stephenson and Agnes Mounk are correct, but it still remains to be proved.
Buried in "South yard of parish church of St. Buttolph without Algate".
