James Ward of Ratate (now Greenebrier Co) was commissioned as an ensign in the militia on the 16th day of Aug 1763 under Col. Andrew Lewis at Staunton, Augusta Co. In the autumn of 1774, the Revolutionary troubles had already begun, although war was not declared until the following Spring. It was the belief of the Colonials and all historians have recorded that the Indians were urged on in their attacks by Great Britain to weaken the colonies. The Battle of Point Pleasant occurred in 1774. The troops were commanded by Gen. Andrew Lewis. James Ward was a Capt in Col. Wm. Flemings regiment and one of the experienced officers sent to the front to meet the Indians under their Chief Cornstalk. Capt. James Ward was killed early in the day of 10 Oct 1774.
